Møbelringen breaks free from SQL

Møbelringen is a premier Norwegian retail company selling furniture through 70 member-owned and independent stores, bringing in roughly 1.4 billion NOK a year. The head office in Drammen handles quality assurance for the furniture range, runs the company's marketing, and manages the IT that the whole operation depends on.

When only a few people could be trusted with the data

Møbelringen has run Infor M3 as its primary ERP system since 2005, today on version 13.4, hosted by Evry. But getting data into the system meant manual entry, and making changes to it meant writing SQL directly against the tables. That's not a risk-free way to work. It takes real expertise to do safely, which meant that in practice, only a select few people at Møbelringen could be trusted to maintain the company's data at all.

Møbelringen wanted more of its regular M3 users to be able to handle these tasks themselves, without needing that specialist SQL knowledge. APIs looked like a possible way to open that door.

Møbelringen invested in the Excel Add-In back in 2017, and it's now used daily by employees across article and price imports, article corrections, purchase orders, stock updates, and producing customer invoices. The return on that investment showed up quickly. Data quality improved, particularly around price updates, and the hours and overtime that used to go into this kind of work dropped considerably.
