This Excel tool has a cult following at Dahl

Waiting a month for price changes was normal at Swedish Dahl – but that was until the “cult” came along.

Dahl Sverige AB is Sweden's leading distributor of plumbing, HVAC, and building materials, and is part of the French multinational Saint-Gobain Group.

The 40-row ceiling

For years, Dahl Sverige’s M3 users had to follow a golden rule: Data changes up to 40 rows in M3 – do it yourself. Anything above that had to be handled by the IT department or consultants.

– We had our reasons. Updating many rows in M3 takes a lot of time. Also, it is really monotonous, which often leads to mistakes, says Sharon Doraswamy, solution specialist at Saint-Gobain, the French materials group that owns Dahl Sverige AB.

This golden rule had its drawbacks, though:

– For our users, waiting around a month for new price lists or sales codes to be updated was completely normal. We had to do something, and that “something” turned out to be Vince.

Dahl Sverige uses the Vince Excel add-in for Infor M3.

It lets end users handle all M3 data maintenance themselves, directly in Excel – no matter if they’re updating 40 or 40 000 rows.

From weeks to minutes

– People are always a little skeptic when they have to change the way they work. But with the Vince Excel add-in, the improvement has just been drastic, says Johanna Bruno, head of KAM Business Support at Dahl Sverige AB.

She and her team serve Key Account Managers – updating customer data, prices and contracts.

– One time, we were closing down a store and moving everything to another. 50 000 items that needed to be written in manually. The whole thing was expected to take two weeks. No thanks! I did it in an hour with Vince, and that includes the time it took to write the template, grins Bruno.

More power to the people

Speed isn't everything, though. By giving data control back to the business, Dahl Sverige has cut delays, improved quality and freed up IT to focus on bigger things.

– Decentralizing data means that the people who know the data best also own it. That means faster updates and fewer mistakes, and it is a lot cheaper than hiring consultants, exclaims Doraswamy.

The Vince cult

These days, as soon as Dahl Sverige's M3 users stumbles across an obstacle, Sharon is just a quick request away. She can have a new function up and running in as little as 30 minutes.

– We’ve been redeemed, laughs Doraswamy. I just can’t stop spreading the word. We actually like to refer to ourselves as “The Vince cult”.

Bruno, on the other hand, uses a pure “show, don’t tell” tactic.

– I drag skeptics over to my screen, show them how I bulk-update 10 000 prices in seconds and wait for their jaws to drop. And just like that, another member of the cult.
